The remake of the classically awesome movie Mad Max (originally made in 1979) has been highly anticipated and adored by many fans. With fire, explosions, mental drivers, extreme cars, hot models (literally) and flame thrower guitar solos. You really couldn’t ask for a more kick ass movie!
Believe it or not the film has more to the plot that just a car chase. When Mad Max /Max Rockantansky (Tom Hardy) is haunted by his past, he is captured and used as a blood bag for a crazy and very pale character called Nux (Nicholas Hoult). As human blood bags tend to last longer than the NHS usual. Unfortunately for Max the group that Nux belongs to has a lunatic leader aka. Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Joe uses his ability to find water and produce healthy offspring from his five wives, over his subjects. So when his women are taken by one of his lieutenants; Imperaton Furiosa (Charlize Theron), he sends his group to get them back, along with Nux, who is in fact attached to Max, Yikes!
Max Rockatansky: [Narrating] My name is Max. My world is fire and blood. Once, I was a cop. A road warrior searching for a righteous cause. As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. It was hard to know who was more crazy… me… or everyone else.
This plot is established within the first 30 minutes of the film, allowing the audience to understand the plot and give some character development. This leaves the rest of the film time for an epic car chase. Yes, the rest of the film is literally just a car chase. Granted there are a lot of cars with cool add-ons and a tendency to blow up. However, it is essentially just a bunch of cars following each other but who is complaining, it is visually amazing!
Unlike a lot of films that are usually set in America or the United Kingdom, this film is set in the Australian outback and even filmed there. It’s huge, hot and barren. It is truly a perfect stretch of uneven land for a big car chase. You can hardly tell that they are post apocalypse from the land as Australia usually looks like that. But you only haft to look at the people for 30 seconds to tell that the whole world has gone to hell. This explains however why Joe has so much power over his subjects , If you were stuck in the outback , you are going to need water and soil to grow food and you would do pretty much anything for it.
According to the film, all this started 10 years ago. Could this really happen within just 10 years? Probably, have you seen how people react in these situations? I mean just look at World war Z (Marc Forster, 2013) the whole world went to crap in about an hour.
(Check out my review on World War Z- https://howhaveyounotseenthis.wordpress.com/2015/07/28/world-war-z-marc-forster2013/ )
Despite the death and destruction it does end happy, even though not much is resolved. However, the people seemed happy enough. Therefore, the film does have a plot… but they needed a good excuse for a car chase. Narrative wise the film wasn’t well developed but visually and in terms of awe inspiring action it is for sure 5 stars.
There is not much to say otherwise on this action packed film. It is fast, crazy and there is a lot of driving involved. I would defiantly suggest any action nut to watch this mental movie.
How have you not seen this?
