From the Poltergeist trailer (Gil Kenan, 2015), what can fans expect from the new movie and how does it seem to differ from the original (Tobe Hooper &Steven Spielberg, 1982)? Audience research analysis

From the new poltergeist trailer, it is clear that the remake will be more horrific than the original due to the advancements in special effects / CGI and how the horror genre has changed over time. These changed to the horror genre occurred as audience have become desensitised over time, meaning it takes a lot more to scare people.  Therefore, the remake should appear less comical than the original.

The remake appears rather different from the original as it does show the potential to be more terrifying so could essentially seem better than the original, to those who have not seen the original. However, if you are a fan of the original and are a horror classic fan then nothing can beat the 1982 version. In addition to this, it can be argue again that technology has advanced overtime and as the film is a much more modern , then the film must reflect the time in which it is set by including devices from 2015, such as  the IPhone and flat screen televisions. Furthermore, there a small changes to the plot, this can include the way the characters first interact with the ghosts (chairs to wardrobe), there seems to be no dog in the remake and the film seems to be centred on the children compared to the whole family. Likewise, the ghosts seem to look a lot different and the film focuses more on jump scares.

In addition, the original was directed by Tobe Hooper &Steven Spielberg and the remake was directed by Gil Kenan and as directors each have a unique style, then the overall feel of the film will be different.

On the other hand, the film seems to stick to have a similar narrative and ultimately stick to the plot of the original, with the events starting off calm and progressing overtime.  Furthermore, the girl is still taken, resulting in an investigator to be called, however the “cleanser” is a man instead of a woman.  Another key feature within the film is they have included the original monsters, such as the clown and the tree. This makes it obvious that the remake has the potential to please it audiences through appearing more scary but still sticking to the original.

Divergent review (Neil Burger ,2014): the God complex.

For me divergent is another film franchise based on a book, extremely similar to The Hunger Games (Gary Ross, 2012) and The Maze Runner (Wes Ball, 2014) , based around the government’s power  that our hero attempting to overthrow.  However, we keep watching as they are individual in a sense and have good narratives and engaging characters.

divergent

Within Divergent  Chicago has been spilt into groups based on traits and personality ,  however, the  government has created a serum to control visions and essentially everyone lives but are heroin Triss (Shailene Woodley) has the ability to fight the serum and has given herself the responsibility to save everyone .

“I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless.

I am Divergent. And I can’t be controlled.”

― Veronica Roth, Divergent

Through the use of the fractions to control peace and the serum and its ability to control everyone, the idea of a God complex is created within the government, as science has provided them with the opportunity to remove free will. Therefore, if advancements similar to this situation are created, would the notion of playing God be a regular part of life.  On the other hand, if we think this through, it can be argued that this is already the case; due to the fact that we are being forced to do specific things because of the laws created by the government, for example we are forced into an education and to pay taxes, even though this can be for our own good, we are unable to refuse. Therefore, we can ask, do we really have free will because of the democracy we live in?

“Every faction conditions its members to think and act a certain way. And most people do it. For most people, it’s not hard to learn, to find a pattern of thought that works and stay that way. But our minds move in a dozen different directions. We can’t be confined to one way of thinking, and that terrifies our leaders. It means we can’t be controlled. And it means that no matter what they do, we will always cause trouble for them.”

― Veronica Roth, Divergent

Enough of the philosophy lesson, even though divergent can cause us to think of the possibilities of the feature, the film is still action packed and full of clinches (moments of tension), with romance and murder, this is an ideal recipe for a Hunger games film… oh I mean Divergent film.  The film would make you ask yourself; what fraction would I be in? What book franchise are they going to turn into a film next for a large financial gain?  Wait are Hazel and Augustus now brother and sister?

If you have also seen The fault in our stars (Josh Boone,2014)our beloved Hazel Grace (Shailene Woodley ) and  Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort ) are of course star crossed lovers BUT in Divergent they play brother and sister,  the fault in our co-stars! I think they could have casted this a bit different just to remove the idea of brother sister love.  However, overall the film is very enjoyable and holds a very strong fan base.

Not aloud to hit the zombies !

If you have been tuning in to watch BBC3’s new show I survived the zombie apocalypse on a Monday evening, then you may agree with me on some of the issues with the show. However, as it is on the same day as AMC’s The Walking Dead, then you are in for a zombie fest.

The show is basically about a group of people who have been put in a shopping centre and must attempt to survive for 7 days, with the help of the army who are talking to them through a speaker. Each day they must participate in a number of missions, in order to gain supplies. These missions usually include going out and getting food and water, which of course is necessary for survival. However, for the show to keep the audience entertained and give them something to show, they send the survivors out on meaningless tasks, like finding cleaning products and checking the wall to see if anyone has put any notices up, Which of course is necessary, when it comes to staying alive.

The most important part of the narrative is always the cause of the outbreak and in this case was caused by 5G WI-Fi. Yeah sounds bizarre, I have no idea how that works either.

Another issue with this programme is the fact that the zombies only seem to attack on the way back from their mission and never on the way there. This is probably so they are able to complete their mission and gather the resources they need to survive, as this is in fact a television show and the BBC is not allowed to actually kill anyone.  This is also why the zombies/ actors hide from the other survivors and only come after them at certain times.

The Survivors

The Survivors

However, despite these factors causing this programme to be unrealistic, there is one other thing that bothers me… the fact that the survivors cannot hit the zombies! Yes I know that they are actors and again the BBC is not allowed to hurt or kill anyone.  BUT we all know the first thing to crab in a zombie apocalypse will be a weapon, so the fact that none of the people have a weapon is just unrealistic. This means that whenever a survivor is cornered they have no hope of living! They are just torn apart, which leads to a cut scene of our survivors being half eaten alive and then left.  We never actually know if they turn and are left wondering why the zombies didn’t eat all of him.

The fun thing about the show is the emergency broadcast info-mercials, it seems that there really is an apocalypse and that is what the television would show! The show can also make you think how you would really act in a zombie apocalypse.  Personally I think the running would be an issue.

How long do you think you could survive?
